English language and Literature:

The course involves the development of sophisticated reading skills and improves the ability to place literary texts in their wider intellectual and historical contexts. It also requires students to learn about literary form and technique, and to study the development of the English language.

Learning Outcome:

The course will focus on training students to analyze the workings of the English language outside of literature including language based communication. The course will typically allow students to study literary texts from history ranging from different periods, relating to their cultural, social, historical and political contexts. Seminars and group discussions will provide the perfect setting to test the ideas of students and gain a better understanding of the language and its literature through debate and exchange of ideas. The aim is to get students to think creatively as well as analytically about the English language.
